In Memory

It is with much sadness that I inform the membership of the passing of retired member Brother Bill Miller on April 5, 2008 in his 77th year. Brother Miller was well known and liked by all who had the opportunity to know him and work with him. We extend our sincere condolences to family, relatives and friends. Brother Miller will be deeply missed but not forgotten by all who knew him.

Durham College Job Opportunities

The School of Applied Sciences, Apprenticeships, Skilled Trades & Technology at Durham College is continually looking for qualified skilled trades teaching professionals interested in teaching on a part time and contract basis. Candidates must posses a minimum of five years experience in the field, appropriate educational background, certification in the area of expertise and teaching experience at the post secondary level.

Saturday Morning Training

The JAC and the Education Committee report much interest and success with the Saturday morning training held at Local 894 facilities. At present conduit bending, ropes and rigging have been the main focus for the apprentices. The next classes will begin introducing basic wiring circuits using romex, BX and wire in conduit. Plans for Motor controls with disconnects, splitters, starters, stop/start stations etc. are well on the way to being implemented in the fall. Thank you to the journeymen who come out to teach and pass on their skills and “tricks of the trade” to the apprentices. Work in Local 894 Area

All contractors involved with the second phase at General Motors will be calling for manpower very soon. The information provided indicates around May 5th . To name a few contractors requiring manpower will be, Conti Electric, The State Group, Net Electric, Bright Electric, Comstock.

At the Ajax Hospital the OZZ Corporation is progressing with major renovations to the existing building and footings etc. for the addition are well under way.

The Peterborough Hospital is winding down with expectations to have patients moving into the new hospital in June.

The Oshawa courthouse is progressing slowly having the third floor pour completed and three more to go. Hiring is expected to be slow until the entire slab is completed.

The automotive wind tunnel at Durham College/UOIT will be out for tender in a week or two. The College news indicates it will be open for the fall of 2009. Information provided at this time has Van Bots as the general contractor with no subs announced.

The uncompleted floors at Oshawa General Hospital are reported to be out for tender to be completed and news of that project should be forthcoming.
