It is with deep sorrow I inform the membership of the passing of Local 894 member Wendy Mountenay on October 18, 2007. Wendy began her employment with Local 894 in September 1980 and was initiated as a BA member in December 1988. Wendy was our Office Administrator for almost 28 years and her knowledge and skills on how the IBEW operated was an enormous asset to Local 894. We share this great loss and send our sincere condolences to Brad & Tammy, their children Jillian and Jonathan, relatives and friends. Wendy will be dearly missed, but not forgotten.
Ladies Night has come and gone again with everyone in attendance having a great time. The dinner served by the Polish Veteran’s Ladies Auxiliary was first class as always. We would also like to thank the Electrical Contractor’s Association of Oshawa & District for their generous gift of ten $100.00 dollar bills which were drawn and ten lucky winners each became $100.00 wealthier and offer their personal thanks to the ECA Oshawa.
Reminder: Always carry your C of Q or Apprentice Card with you at all times while at work. Recently the Department of Labour visited the project at Durham Recycling in Whitby. The Local 894 members on the project all had their proper paperwork with them and other trades were ordered off the job and the General Contractor was issued a fine. Also be sure you have an up to date C of Q. One day overdue and you may be ordered off site and or be liable for a $350.00 fine or more.
It was brought to my attention by a representative from the First District Office that Local 894 bylaws state
if a member is not working under the terms of the local union agreement and not working in the electrical trade
the “A” members basic dues shall be $25.00 per month plus the International Dues (Total at present: $48.00 per month).
This would include members that are full time policemen, firemen, roofing contractors, electrical inspectors etc.
Members in this category may apply for an Honorary Withdrawal Card.
If a member is not working under the terms of the local union agreement and is working in the electrical trade,
he/she must pay, in addition to the above, $8.70 per month to the Local 894 Social and Assistance Fund.
(Total at present: $56.70 per month)
Unemployed members and members working in other IBEW locals shall pay International dues plus basic local dues
of $1.00 per month. (Total $24.00 per month)
> 3 months in arrears of applicable dues results in $30.00 reinstatement fee plus union dues owed
> 6 months in arrears of applicable dues results in member expelled from IBEW
The above Bylaws will be in effect November 1, 2007
Any member not desiring to maintain his standing, who retires from the trade or is unemployed, or in such other cases as may be decided by the L.U., may be granted an Honorary Withdrawal Card. Members on Honorary Withdrawal Card pay no dues, as they do not pay for pension and death benefits. It must be clearly understood, however, that an “A” member who accepts Honorary Withdrawal Card status forfeits all claims to IBEW pension and death benefits that he would have retained if he had continued “A” membership.
The Participating Withdrawal Card is for the member who desires to maintain his standing after leaving the trade. Members on Participating Withdrawal Card pay International Dues only.
Effective January 1, 2008, members working under the local union agreement, monthly dues payable will be $24.00
International Dues, plus $1.00 local dues, ($25.00)
3 months - $75.00; 6 months – $150.00; 12 months – $300.00
To accommodate the Christmas festive season the December General Meeting will be held one week early on December 20, 2007 at 6:30 P.M. at Local 894 meeting hall.
Brother Raye West is organizing a Christmas Holiday Food Drive again this year as he has done in the past. Donations of non- perishable food items or cash donations may be dropped off at the office, at General Meetings or at the upcoming Children’s Christmas Party on December 8, 2007. All donations will be delivered to charities in time for Christmas to aid the less fortunate. We thank you in advance for your participation.
